Join Amelia Sherwood, Julian Hoad and Sam Lane for an engaging session tackling three tricky wound cases, where they will delve into various considerations - from the initial approach to wound management, to ongoing care and closure options.
Each panellist brings a unique perspective to the conversation - exploring surgical interventions, traumatic wound management, the nurse's role in wound care, and holistic aspects such as contextualised care and appropriate analgesia. This session will be valuable to vets and nurses alike, as we work through case-based scenarios requiring a strong team approach.
Meet The Expert Speakers
Julian Hoad
BSc(Hons) BVetMed HonMBVNA MRCVS
Dr Julian Hoad is a Veterinary Surgeon who qualified in 1996 after earning a degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry. He has served as a partner, owner, and clinical director at Crossways Vets in West Sussex for 17 years. Julian has been a part of the BSAVA Education Committee, BSAVA PetSavers Grants Awarding Committee, and was lately part of the Publications Committee; he then joined the Presidential ladder two years ago as Junior Vice President, and is currently serving as 2024/25 President.
Julian has a strong interest in Ultrasonography and Surgery. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he enjoys Rock Climbing, Amateur Dramatics, and has a passion for languages, travel, Tapirs and baking.


Sam Lane
BVSc BSAVA PGCertSAS MRCVS RCVS
Sam graduated from the University of Bristol in 2008. After a brief period in general practice, Sam returned to complete a rotating internship followed by a specialised internship in anaesthesia and pain management. Sam then returned to general practice, where she continued developing her strong interest in surgery, achieving the BSAVA Certificate in Small Animal Surgery with distinction in 2015. In 2016, she was awarded RCVS Advanced Practitioner status in Small Animal Surgery.
Alongside clinical work, she is committed to professional development and education. Sam serves as Chair of the South West region of the BSAVA, where she oversees the coordination of CPD events for local practitioners. Sam is also an active member of AVSTS, contributing to discussions and developments in veterinary soft tissue surgery.
Amelia Sherwood
RVN NCert (Anaesth)
Amelia began her nursing career in 2008 and spent many years in leadership positions within primary care practices and as an OSCE examiner and SQP assessor. In more recent years, she diversified into non-clinical roles as a Territory Account Manager for a veterinary instrument supplier and as Regional Nursing Manager for a large corporate group supporting nursing teams across the South West.
Over the past 10 years, Amelia has taught wound management and nurse utilisation to veterinary teams and had the pleasure of speaking on these subjects at various international events. She now delivers in-house training and education to veterinary teams, through her consultancy business “Tissue Viability Vet Nurse” and works as Education Manager for Elearning.vet scheduling content and speakers for the Veterinary Nurse Membership.
