Recommendations for navigating clinic and client perspectives, including informed consent and shared decision making
This two-part session from Dr Brennen McKenzie and Nicola Lakeman RVN will explore evidence-based approaches to neutering dogs and cats, as well as how to approach the discussion with owners to ensure consent is fully informed.
Bring your questions, as we'll have a shared Q&A session after both speakers' presentations with Alexandria Lipka, Deputy Editor at BVA.

Part One - Brennen McKenzie
(The SkeptVet)
This session is intended to illustrate an approach to formulating and communicating neutering recommendations. We will first consider balancing the risks and benefits of the process for individual dogs and cats to arrive at a recommendation, with examples of some specific variables and conditions. We will then consider how to communicate our recommendations to clients with acknowledgement of the complexity and inevitable uncertainty involved and how to manage owner misconceptions and objections.

Part Two - Nicola Lakeman

The time of admission for an anaesthetic is a potentially stressful time for owners. It’s also a time limited situation where potentially several admissions need to be performed. Gaining informed consent around the subject of neutering is a complex area, with the owner being required to know and understand the positives and negatives of surgical and medical neutering.
