Staying Alive
We get back 34 - 45% of patients that suffer a cardiac arrest, but only 2-10% will survive to discharge. Management of post cardiac arrest syndrome may be the missing link. There is limited research on the best way to care for these critical patients but there is enough to understand some of the goals we need to achieve. The first 12 hours post CPR is an important window of time for restoring normal perfusion, oxygenation, ventilation and managing the underlying cause of the arrest. The veterinary team will need to deal with potential ischaemia and re-perfusion injuries as well as the development of acute injuries to organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys. Putting together a bundle of care for post arrest patients can help to improve that survival to discharge rate. There are also questions of ethics in patients with life limiting diseases, managing communication with owners and potentially also with specialists for advice or referral. During this webinar we will cover some of the physiological and cellular changes that occur in ischaemia and reperfusion injury and the care bundles we can put into place to limit the damage that has occurred from getting worse. Putting it all together with a case study at the end.

Meet The Speaker
My name is Claire Woolford, I am a qualified veterinary nurse. I started nursing in 1998 and spent 8 years working in general practice before leaving to travel through Australia and New Zealand. In 2006 I joined Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire where I am a head nurse and in charge of running the Soft Tissue department. I achieved my VTS (Veterinary Technician Specialist) in Anesthesia and Analgesia in 2013 and worked on the AVTAA Credentials Committee between 2014 and 2021. I was also a member of the BSAVA congress programme committee for 3 years. I have spoken at both BSAVA and BVNA national conferences and regional CPD events. I now run my own small CPD company Synergy CPD which provides tailored in-house and virtual training in all areas of anaesthesia, analgesia and CPR alongside some locum work.
