Anaesthesia of Exotics Species

Anaesthetising exotic species is often something that makes veterinary surgeons and nurses uncomfortable when in general practice, especially if they are not done on a regular basis.

This lecture aims to dispel many myths associated with anaesthetising a wide variety of exotic species, whilst simultaneously providing vets and nurses with the skills to undertake these often challenging and comparatively high-risk anaesthetics. Specifics on pre-, peri- and post-operative care of exotic species will be discussed, as well as how best to monitor these patients and minimise anaesthetic associated risks.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • To understand the pre-operative essentials that pertain to exotic species
  • Learn how to intubate a variety of exotic species
  • Understand how to provide the best peri-operative care for exotic species
  • To understand the use and limitations of various monitoring equipment for exotic species
  • Understand how to provide the best post-operative care for exotic species
