Wound Closure Techniques; Avoiding Tension
Julian Hoad ┃ Studio Session ┃ On-Demand
Talk Summary
This session will explore the use of skin flaps for the reconstruction of large skin deficits in small animal patients, focusing on practical decision-making and surgical planning in wound closure. Through a series of clinical case examples, delegates will be guided through the indications, principles and application of three commonly used flap techniques: random pattern flaps, axial pedicle flaps and myocutaneous flaps.
The presentation will discuss factors influencing flap selection, including wound location, vascular supply, tissue availability and tension management, alongside patient considerations such as contamination, trauma severity and overall viability of surrounding tissue. Surgical planning, flap design, tissue handling and common complications will also be reviewed to support successful outcomes in reconstructive surgery.
By combining surgical principles with real clinical experiences, the session aims to provide delegates with a practical framework for approaching challenging wounds requiring advanced closure techniques. Attendees will gain greater confidence in selecting appropriate reconstructive options and understanding the advantages and limitations of different skin flap techniques in everyday veterinary practice.
